Pullfolio is looking for designers to help with themes

One of the suggestions from our growing user base is that we should have a wider selection of themes. We want you to know that we heard you. We are going to open it up by looking for theme designers who are interested in showcasing their design skills, gaining more exposure, and earning some money.

Here is how it works – if you are a web designer, graphics designer, CSS/HTML/JavaScript/jQuery guru, contact us at themes@pullfolio.com, and we will provide you all the help you’ll need to build Pullfolio themes. We’ll make these themes available to our users. You will receive full credits for your work, and be compensated when users use your themes. The only restriction we have is that you cannot use Flash, but we would love to have a few HTML5 themes.

As a reminder, our Pro users can already create custom themes, or pick one of our default themes as a starting point and modify it to your heart’s content. We have a web-based theme editor that makes it easy to do just that. We have an extensive Pullfolio Themes Howto document to show you how themes work. We have also shared the code of an example theme at Github.

Finally, here’s an example of a pro user who created his custom theme: danielnewman.info

Flickr is having problems

We are seeing a large number of Timeouts at Pullfolio, this is because Flickr is having some serious hiccups right now, and there is nothing we can do about that when Flickr is down as we use their API extensively. Bad timing for us as we are getting a lot of new users setting up Pullfolios.

Flickr is working on it at the moment and they are posting updates at Flickr Blog.

Sorry for any inconvenience. Hopefully they will be back up soon.

Added “www” prefix support for custom domains

Back in the days, most websites had www in front of the domain names, this was because web servers weren’t always listening at the same IP address as the domain itself. But that is very 10 years ago, now with reverse proxies, load balancers, and srv records, there is almost no reason to have www in front of any website.

When we wrote the custom domain logic for Pro users, we did a lookup on the hostname (reqeuest.host), and if it doesn’t match we give you a 404. We decided that the www prefix is so commonly used or misused that we should be able to look up your Pullfolio if you setup yourname.com and you try to go to www.yourname.com and vice versa. So after writing a few tests, and adding the implementations to handle all 4 cases, we deployed a fix so now custom domains work with or without www prefix.

You can upgrade to a free Trial to check out our custom domain support.

Theme editor changes

Some of you probably noticed we added screenshots to the Themes section, we just deployed a few themeing changes:

  • Now to create a new theme you have to clone an existing one – we found out that creating a new theme from scratch was too involved, but when you clone another theme, you can easily go in and make changes
  • We removed the ability to delete the required theme files – before the latest deploy, Pro users were able to delete any theme files, but if they delete for example portfolio.liquid, their Pullfolio site is really not going to work at all. So we added logics to the theme model so those files cannot be removed

I will update our Theme Howto at our FAQ to reflect these changes real soon. Expect more changes to how the themes work, we are working hard to make themeing easier for our less-technical users.

Now you can include more information in invitations

Each Pullfolio account comes with 5 invites so you can invite your Flickr friends to join our private beta. Some users reported that the invitations they sent got ignored or marked as spam as the recipients had no idea who sent it, and that they had to send follow up emails to make sure they were looked at.

Last week we added an optional field to add your name and a brief message when you send an invite:

Hopefully this will smooth out the invite flow a bit, so if you think you know someone who would find Pullfolio useful, invite away!
